From Caesar Rodney to Pastor Shirley Caesar: A Celebration of History, Faith & Freedom

Over the course of one remarkable week in June, communities across Delaware will experience two very different — yet deeply connected — celebrations of the American journey.

From the historic reenactment of Caesar Rodney’s legendary ride for independence to an uplifting Juneteenth worship celebration featuring gospel icon Pastor Shirley Caesar, these events invite audiences to reflect on freedom, perseverance, faith, sacrifice, and the many voices that helped shape America’s story.

Beginning June 12–13, 250Ride.org will bring history to life through a multi-day living history reenactment retracing Caesar Rodney’s historic overnight ride from Dover, Delaware to Philadelphia, the journey that helped secure Delaware’s deciding vote for American independence in 1776.

More than a reenactment, the 250 Ride has grown into a statewide educational and community initiative led by the Delaware Italian American Foundation, combining immersive storytelling, historical interpretation, community events, and the organization’s “Unheard Voices of the Revolution” initiative — highlighting individuals whose contributions are often overlooked in traditional Revolutionary War narratives.

The journey launches with a special service and ceremony at historic Christ Church in Dover before the carriage embarks on its two-day journey across Delaware, including community stops, educational experiences, a Friday evening Gala celebration at Thousand Acre Farm, participation in Separation Day festivities in Historic New Castle, and a ceremonial arrival in Philadelphia.

Just days later, another powerful celebration centered around freedom, faith, resilience, and community will take place as Canaan Baptist Church joins forces with 250Ride.org and the Delaware Italian American Foundation to host two special Juneteenth worship celebrations featuring Pastor Shirley Caesar on June 18 and 19, 2026.

Known worldwide as the “Queen of Gospel,” Pastor Shirley Caesar’s legendary career has spanned more than six decades, earning multiple Grammy Awards while inspiring generations through music, ministry, and faith.

Held at Canaan Baptist Church in New Castle, Delaware, the two-night celebration will blend worship, music, reflection, fellowship, and community as audiences gather to commemorate Juneteenth and honor the continuing journey toward unity and understanding.

While the events themselves are very different in tone and format, both initiatives share a common thread: preserving stories, honoring perseverance, and bringing people together through living history, faith, music, and community engagement.

In many ways, “From Caesar to Caesar” reflects the broader spirit behind America’s 250th anniversary — not simply revisiting history, but exploring the many voices, struggles, triumphs, and traditions that continue to shape the American experience.

As Delaware prepares to welcome visitors, families, history enthusiasts, churches, educators, and communities from across the region this June, organizers hope both events encourage reflection, conversation, and connection across generations.
