The Mission Behind the 250 Ride & Foundation Supporting It

The 250 Ride is more than a reenactment. It is a statewide civic initiative designed to honor the full and complex story of America’s founding as we approach our nation’s 250th birthday.
Behind this effort stands the Delaware Italian American Foundation (DIAF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to preserving heritage, elevating overlooked voices, and producing meaningful public events that connect communities through history.
The 250 Ride is fully funded by the Foundation, with designated contributions supporting continued education, storytelling, and programming that honors every hero of the American Revolution — including the often-overlooked contributions of women, African Americans, and Native Americans.
For the Foundation, this project is deeply personal.
Caesar Rodney, whose historic overnight ride from Dover to Philadelphia helped secure Delaware’s vote for independence, carried Italian lineage — a point of pride long recognized by the Delaware Italian American community. But the Foundation’s vision extends far beyond one man.
It extends toward the whole historical record.
A Mission Larger Than One Ride
Founder Ciro Poppiti, a civic leader, historian, and attorney with an extensive record of producing large-scale public events, views the 250 Ride as a generational opportunity.
Having recently deployed to the Middle East with the U.S. Army and continuing to serve in the Delaware National Guard as a lawyer-soldier, Poppiti understands service — both in uniform and in civic life.
For him, history is not static. It is active. It is shared. It is inclusive.
“The 250 Ride is a fulcrum,” Poppiti explains. “It gives us a powerful moment to elevate the entire historical record — not just the famous names, but the women, African Americans, and Native Americans whose contributions shaped this nation from the beginning. If we are going to celebrate 250 years of independence, we must tell the whole story.”
Under his leadership, the Delaware Italian American Foundation has positioned the Ride not simply as a commemoration of Caesar Rodney, but as a living educational campaign — one that includes the Unheard Voices of the Revolution, statewide programming, community partnerships, and long-term historical engagement.
A Charitable Platform for Education and Inclusion
Funding designated for the 250 Ride supports:
Educational programming
Portrait and storytelling initiatives
Public reenactments and civic events
Historical research and inclusive narrative development
The Delaware Italian American Foundation believes heritage should be celebrated — but also shared.
As America approaches its Semiquincentennial, the 250 Ride stands as both tribute and invitation: a call to remember, reflect, and recommit to the ideals that shaped our republic.
