Keeping History Alive Through the Arts: Candlelight Theatre Helps Bring the 250 Ride to Life

One of the most remarkable aspects of the 250 Ride is the collaboration taking place behind the scenes.

While thousands of people will see Caesar Rodney, the Unheard Voices of the Revolution, and the many historical figures who will bring this living history experience to life on June 12–13, few will realize the incredible effort required to authentically recreate the look and feel of Revolutionary-era America.

That is why the team at 250Ride.org is proud to recognize and thank The Candlelight Theatre of Delaware for its extraordinary partnership and support.

Located in historic Ardentown, The Candlelight Theatre has been a Delaware cultural institution for decades, entertaining audiences through professional productions, educational programs, and a commitment to preserving the performing arts. Since opening its doors in 1969, Candlelight has become one of Delaware’s most beloved theatrical institutions, bringing stories to life while fostering creativity, education, and community engagement throughout the region.

When planning began for the 250 Ride reenactment and the Unheard Voices of the Revolution initiative, authenticity quickly became a priority. Bringing history to life requires more than research—it requires costumes, wigs, props, makeup, and the expertise to transform modern-day participants into recognizable figures from the eighteenth century.

Without hesitation, Candlelight Theatre opened its doors.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Bob Kelly, the theatre generously provided access to costumes, wigs, props, and theatrical resources that have helped elevate the overall presentation of the project. Their support has allowed the 250 Ride team to create a more immersive experience for visitors while helping historical interpreters portray their characters with greater authenticity and historical accuracy.

The partnership has also introduced the 250 Ride team to one of Candlelight’s most talented creative professionals, Clayton Stacey, the theatre’s Hair, Wig, and Makeup Designer.

Clayton has become an invaluable resource in helping shape the appearance of several historical characters participating in the reenactment. His attention to detail, creativity, and passion for theatrical storytelling have already made a significant impact on the project. Whether assisting with period-appropriate wigs, styling, or character presentation, his work has helped bridge the gap between history and performance. His contributions will be featured in greater detail in a future article highlighting the talented artists helping bring the 250 Ride to life.

The 250 Ride team would also like to acknowledge the many staff members, volunteers, artists, and board members at Candlelight Theatre who continue to support arts and culture throughout Delaware. Their willingness to share resources, expertise, and encouragement exemplifies the community spirit that has made this project possible.

Special thanks are extended to Board President Teri Healy, Artistic Director Bob Kelly, Jane Treacy, George D. Rotsch, Clayton Stacey, and the entire Candlelight Theatre family for helping preserve history through the power of performance. Their collective commitment to the arts and to community partnerships has played an important role in helping the 250 Ride create an authentic and memorable living history experience.

"The 250 Ride is ultimately about storytelling," said Jesse Heninger, Director of Marketing for 250Ride.org. "When people see Caesar Rodney, Thomas Rodney, Jacob Broom, and the many Unheard Voices of the Revolution, they are connecting with history in a way that books alone cannot accomplish. Candlelight Theatre understands the power of bringing stories to life, and their generosity has helped make this experience far more authentic and meaningful for everyone involved."

The connection between the performing arts and living history is a natural one. Both seek to educate, inspire, and create meaningful experiences that leave a lasting impression on audiences. Through this partnership, Candlelight Theatre has helped ensure that visitors will experience the 250 Ride not simply as spectators, but as participants immersed in the sights, sounds, and stories of the Revolutionary era.

As the June 12–13 reenactment approaches, visitors will witness the results of countless hours of preparation from historians, volunteers, artists, costumers, and community partners. Thanks to organizations like Candlelight Theatre—and the leadership of its dedicated board members, staff, and creative team—the story of Delaware’s role in American independence will not simply be told; it will be experienced.

The Delaware Italian American Foundation and 250Ride.org are honored to recognize Teri Healy, Bob Kelly, Jane Treacy, George D. Rotsch, Clayton Stacey, and the entire Candlelight Theatre organization as valued partners in helping history ride again.

Their generosity serves as a reminder that preserving history is truly a community effort. Through the support of organizations like Candlelight Theatre, the stories of our nation's founding generation—and the many voices often left out of traditional narratives—can continue to inspire future generations.
